CRYPTHAND
VIDEO/PROJECTION DESIGNER
Crypthand, written by Lily Falk, is a tragicomedy inspired by the 19th century coded diaries of Anne Lister. The characters in the play wrote to each other in coded messages, and I animated that text so that their words lived in the space with them - often decoding and recoding for the audience to see. The aim was to bring their words to life, so some of the messages were animated to be written 'live' on the walls, and moved and changed to support the story. I also created some digital paper collages for this show to explore the concept of layers of story and how we choose to store and understand history. These bits included an 1800s colonial/comedic paper collage, the world of Ancient Greece, a garden collage which shifted into the feeling of a sunset, and the use of other paper elements.
